Celebrity FAIL

I was at Butter Factory last night with the boy while he schmoozed with other filmmakers, ate sweet popcorn and watched old-school advertisements when Peter Fonda walked in.

Instead of recognising Peter Fonda for his long and lucrative film career (gracing 88 films in total), or his ties to a famous family, the first thing that came to mind when I saw him was:

Why is this weird old white dude wearing a white tracksuit in a club?

Monday morning blues..

Song that popped into my head while I was showering and hasn't stopped playing since.

Old age is not a reason...

Old age is not a reason to quit.

Case in point: Canadian metal band Anvil, who had a modicum of success in the 80's before the bands like such Metallica, Anthrax started showing up and they just faded into obscurity.

Now in their 50's, the two founding members of Anvil are still trying to do what they love best - play heavy metal and be known for it.

I just watched the rockumentary, The story of Anvil, at SIFF last night and it's so great and absurd that Dave was convinced the band was another Spinal Tap (ie. not a real band). And the film does come across as a blend between Spinal Tap and The Wrestler in the sense that it's about people who are past their prime in an industry and profession that typically favours the youth.

But the movie, and more importantly the band is absofuckinglutely great when it really drives through the message that it's never too old to give up on working towards what you really want to do.

Learning french

Lately, the boy has been bugging me to learn to speak some basic french phrases before we embark on our Cannes/Paris trip next month. (My leave has yet to be approved though!)

While the boy is fairly versed in the language (thanks to the help of the Rosetta Stone software), I would be so dead if it were just me alone. The only french I know is how to proposition someone to have carnal inter-relations with me tonight (thank you Lady Marmalade) and this song written by Serge Gainsbourg long time ago.

I can, however, talk in a crappy french accent. Would that help?

These words will live forever.. kinda

"I have no questions, only criticisms."

- Queen beeyatch's words to one of the nine directors at last night's Singapore International Film Festival Q&A session after the screening of Singapore Shorts Finalists.

Hijacked

Okay, so I'm a couple of days slow in blogging about the change in AWARE leadership (which in internet time is akin to suicide).

Putting aside the speculation on whether the coup was an orchestrated effort or not, it is disconcerting to me to see how people who are openly anti-gay and homophobic now in positions of leadership in a feminist organisation.

Feminism and gay rights often work in tandem with each other. Very often, you find that the people who are anti-choice are often anti-gay as well. They're your socially conservative people who are usually fuelled by religious dogma or the idea of "traditional family values".

These "traditional family values" people usually advocate the practice of abstinence (which is flawed, dangerous and risky) until the day of marriage, that people can pray away the gay and that kids should only be raised by one mom and dad (wrong, they should be raised by people who love and care for them and their well-being).

But people better than me have dissected this topic, so I'm just going to point you to some links instead:

Discrimination FAIL

The National Organization for Marriage (NOM) in America is spending US$1.5 million on ad spend to scare people into thinking that by legalising gay marriage, it will suddenly impose on the lives of heterosexuals. Oh no, now the poor lady doctor has to choose between her faith (which apparently forbids her to treat the gays and the unsaved) and her job!

But all I could think about when watching the video was: NOM NOM NOM NOM NOM!

Discrimination video fail!

Oh get a room

STFU, Marrieds!

Because there is nothing else more annoying than smug attached people who keep broadcasting to the world how crazy, madly, deeply in love they are with their significant other - leaving them devoid of any other conversation topic.

Heavy-duty listening: Think I Wanna Die

Think I Wanna Die, by Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin

Been listening to Think I Wanna Die on loop pretty much for the last three days. Plus, it helps that the lead singer is cute in a Zach-Braff sorta way. Very soft eyes, and even softer rock.

I hate Michael Bay

I really do. This video just about sums up all there is to Michael Bay's film directing skillz.

What is this, the Taliban regime?

While the Taliban forces are still underground and fighting back in Afghanistan, women's lives have now taken a turn for the worst. In a bid to gain political ground, Afghan president Hamid Karzai has signed a measure which will limit the rights of women to.. essentially nothing..

According to the Guardian article:

The final document has not been published, but the law is believed to contain articles that rule women cannot leave the house without their husbands' permission, that they can only seek work, education or visit the doctor with their husbands' permission, and that they cannot refuse their husband sex.

Does anyone else remember how after 9/11 and the Bush administration to invade Afghanistan, there was a rash of articles in the media which couldn't stop talking about how the women (among other people) were so oppressed.. Girls couldn't go to school! The women had no rights! The burka! Could they even see?

So exactly how different is this from 2001?
